EBNHC Breaks Ground in Maverick Square
The East Boston Neighborhood Health Center broke ground on a new medical building at 20 Maverick Square, East Boston, on June 14, 2010.
Governor Patrick (at left), Mayor Menino, Representative Capuano, and other local officials attended the groundbreaking and dedication ceremony. A huge gathering of staff, supporters, and neighbors joined us as well. View photos at our Hard Hat area and the EBNHC Facebook page. For a PDF "program" of the event, click here.
Our new 49,000 square-foot ambulatory care facility will include clinical space for primary care, vision services, and dental care, as well as increased administrative offices. The beautiful new facility will anchor a revitalized Maverick Square and is expected to generate new investment in the area. The “green” building will be LEED certified, fully energy efficient, and has been designed to complement existing architecture.
The Maverick Square medical building project is funded in part by a $12M grant under the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Facility Investment Program. The East Boston Neighborhood Health Center is deeply committed to realizing the intent of this grant: increasing health care access to those who need it desperately, creating jobs in the short and long term, and revitalizing a depressed area of East Boston.
Barnes School Annual Rooftop BBQ
The Barnes School PACE Center, part of the East Boston Elder Service Plan, recently held this year's annual rooftop BBQ. The weather was beautiful and the food was delicious. Both staff and participants always look forward to this wonderful event with great views of East Boston and Logan Airport. Spending time on the roof is also a nice way to enjoy the residents' rooftop gardens, where they grow their own plants. For an online photo album of the event, click here.
A Patient's Praise
In May 2010, EBNHC was honored to be included in the Boston Globe's Eighth Annual Salute to Nurses. Carol Cohen, a nurse practitioner in our Women's Health Department, was touchingly nominated by Eneida Rodriguez: "Carol Cohen is a wonderful nurse practitioner.... The prenatal care she provided...was exemplary.... She will call me with test results and is persistent until she speaks with me. When coordinating procedures at other hospitals, she makes sure I have an appointment as soon as possible and that I know how to prep for the appointment and how to find the place. She treats me in a very caring and kind manner.... Carol Cohen should be saluted as one of the best nurses in the field. She treats her patients with respect, dignity, kindness, and humility." EBNHC Construction Updates
Our vibrant community is growing. Every day, more people move to the areas of East Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop. Every month, we increase the number of patients we serve. After 40 years, it's no surprise that we're the largest community health center in New England, and one of the largest nationwide. How does a busy health center keep up? By growing, of course! We're renovating at 10 Gove Street and have embarked on the construction of a new facility in Maverick Square. To watch our progress unfold and stay in touch with important patient information, visit the Hard Hat Area of this website.
Do You Have MS?
Find Support and Community at Local Support Group
Individuals who have multiple sclerosis have a new local support group. The East Boston MS Self-Help Group meets the second Wednesday of every month, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the East Boston Social Center, 68 Central Square in East Boston. Formally affiliated with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Central New England Chapter, the group is free and welcomes individuals who have MS as well as their family members and caregivers. Group members will share common experiences and concerns, provide and receive emotional support, and learn about living and coping with MS. For more information, please call group leader Annette Puccino at 617-561-5850.
Senator Kerry Holds Press Conference at EBNHC

At a press conference on Friday, March 26, 2010 at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, Senator John Kerry and Representatives Michael Capuano, John Tierney, Niki Tsongas, and Edward Markey joined state and local officials and health care professionals and advocates to celebrate the federal health care reform legislation signed into law earlier in the week by President Obama.
The law will strengthen Massachusetts’ health reforms, cut costs for families and businesses, bring new federal subsidies into the state, deliver new benefits to families and businesses across Massachusetts, and give the state billions of dollars to provide subsidized coverage and tax relief to small businesses who offer health insurance to their employees. It also dramatically increases funding to community health centers throughout the commonwealth, which play a vital role in providing high-quality care to underserved communities.
Pictured above with Senator Kerry are James Taylor, MD, EBNHC President and Chief Medical Officer (left) and Jack Cradock, EBNHC President and CEO (right).

EBNHC on the Move!

EBNHC is committed to serving the community. Recently, EBNHC CEO Jack Cradock announced the use of a new van that will help make it easier to fulfill this mission. Mike Nicastro, Director of Community Outreach, is pictured at right with the van outside of the health center.
Mike says, “Every day the van helps me be in touch with our community. Yesterday I was able to pick up donations of clothing to be distributed to those in need. I am proud to be part of a health center that works to help others during these tough times.”
Watch for the EBNHC van in your neighborhood—because your good health matters to us!
