EBNHC Receives $12 Million Federal Grant for Maverick Sq. Project
President Barack Obama has announced that EBNHC has been chosen to receive $12 million in federal stimulus funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. Nearly $600 million in ARRA funds designated for capital projects were awarded through a highly competitive process to 85 community health centers nationwide.
The grant will provide critical funding to allow EBNHC to construct a new facility in Maverick Square, East Boston, which will create new clinical space for primary care, vision services, and dental care, all of which are growing and have been operating in cramped space in the main health center building. The new facility will also include administrative space for the organization.
Jack Cradock, President and CEO of EBNHC, traveled to Washington DC last week to meet with President Obama and officially accept the award. “This grant will enable us to bring care to even more patients in our community in those clinical areas that are so very important for public health,” said Cradock. “This new space will allow our center to continue to address the oral health crisis that threatens the well-being of so many young people and to ensure that we can provide primary care to our community, which is the cornerstone of good health and disease prevention.”

Carlo Basile Kicks off Holiday Season at the Elder Service Plan
Born and raised in East Boston, State Representative Carlo Basile gives back to his community in many ways. Carlo demonstrated his commitment to family and community by sponsoring a pizza party at the East Boston PACE Elder Service Plan on November 13. Members of the Barnes School PACE program (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) appreciated Carlo's generous launch of the holiday season with food, fun, and good cheer. You can see more photos of our event at the EBNHC Facebook page.
Many elders do not have family nearby, and the holiday season can be difficult—but the Elder Service Plan provides the community and companionship that make the holidays a little brighter. We're committed to providing quality health care for elders and a social setting that fosters connection and sharing. Carlo shares our commitment to improving the lives of our senior community members, and his outreach always makes a difference. Many thanks, Carlo!
If you're caring for an aging loved one, we're here to help. For more information about the Elder Service Plan PACE program, contact us at 617-568-6377 or click here.

EBNHC and FOX25's Zip Trip
On September 4, we attended the FOX25 News Revere Zip Trip. FOX25 promotes children’s literacy by selecting a different “Zip” location every Friday during the summer and asking the community to bring new books to benefit the Reach Out and Read literacy program. Rita Sorrento, EBNHC Board Chair, is a retired principal and teacher in the Boston school system—and is a long-time supporter of Reach Out and Read. Rita is pictured below (in red, wearing her "READ" pin) along with Pamela Pattavina, Elder Service Plan Director of Marketing (in black), and FOX25 reporters.

EBNHC on the Move!

EBNHC is committed to serving the community. Recently, EBNHC CEO Jack Cradock announced the use of a new van that will help make it easier to fulfill this mission. Mike Nicastro, Director of Community Outreach, is pictured at right with the van outside of the health center.
Mike says, “Every day the van helps me be in touch with our community. Yesterday I was able to pick up donations of clothing to be distributed to those in need. I am proud to be part of a health center that works to help others during these tough times.”
Watch for the EBNHC van in your neighborhood—because your good health matters to us!
EBNHC
Receives Grant to Improve Care for Asthma and COPD Patients
The East Boston Neighborhood Health Center has been selected to receive a Quality Grant award from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care to improve clinical quality and patient safety.
EBNHC will use the grant to develop a chronic disease management program for patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The program will provide high-quality, evidenced-based, and guideline-driven care to adult and pediatric patients. The focus will be on ensuring that patients with asthma and COPD receive recommended medications, preventive care, and appropriate testing.
Peter Smith, MD, oversees the Chronic Disease Education and Management (CDEM) Department at EBNHC. He says, “We are excited about the opportunity this grant will give us to improve the care of patients with asthma and COPD at EBNHC. Asthma and COPD diagnoses are common among the patients we serve, and caring for patients with these chronic illnesses can be a challenge. This grant will make it easier to care for these patients.” Read the press release here.
