Lewis MallWhat's HappeningNews from Lewis MallWhat a kick! In late January, Adam from the Revere Karate Academy came to the Lewis Mall PACE Center to demonstrate karate moves. Participants and staff got a “kick” out of watching recreation assistant Pat Bellone help out with the moves.
Goodbye Philip! Recently, participants and staff of the Elder Service Plan PACE Centers said a sadfarewell to discipline leader of social work, Philip Fleisher. Philip is moving on, but a celebration to honor him and his contributionswas enjoyed by many participants and colleagues. Poems, gifts, and cake were shared and savored. Best wishes to Philip, with his band and in all of his future endeavors.
Happy Birthday, ESP! In early June, participants at the Lewis Mall PACE Center celebrated the Elder Service Plan’s 21st birthday. Ice cream and cake were passed around and shared while participants talked about their own special birthdays in years past.
Sharing information about diabetes Recently, the Elder Service Plan marketing team, along with members of the EBNHC Chronic Disease Education and Management (CDEM) program, helped spread awareness about diabetes. Many people stopped by the display area to complete a short quiz to assess diabetes risk—and to help themselves to a free apple! We were pleased to distribute so many of our diabetes education handouts, available in both English and Spanish. Entertainment from ZUMIX In February, participants and staff at the Lewis Mall PACE Center welcomed representatives from ZUMIX, a community organization that works to build cultural understanding in Boston's diverse neighborhoods. The cultural programming offered by ZUMIX involves many young people and offers an alternative, and entertaining, way for them to deal with frustration, anger, and fear. The ZUMIX performance was well received, encouraging PACE Center participants to sing and dance along with the entertainers.
Birthday season! The Lewis Mall PACE Center was happy to celebrate yet another 100th birthday recently. Participant Marie Mattarazzo is the new centenarian. She enjoyed her cake, gifts, and many good wishes.
Window winners Throughout the year, participants at the Lewis Mall PACE Center decorate windows that face Maverick Square with art work reflecting the different seasons and holidays. Each December, the East Boston Main Streets organization holds a holiday window-decorating contest for businesses and organizations in East Boston. This year the Lewis Mall Center won honorable mention for the third year in a row! Recently staff members from the East Boston Main Streets organization came to Lewis Mall to present the honorable mention certificate. A delicious pudding parfait dessert was served to all.
Super FansMembers of the Lewis Mall PACE Center community celebrated Super Bowl Sunday a few days early. On Friday February 4, 2011, participants were treated to an amazing football cake, and enjoyed some seasonal arts and crafts projects as well.
