News from Lewis Mall

What a kick!

In late January, Adam from the Revere Karate Academy came to the Lewis Mall PACE Center to demonstrate karate moves. Participants and staff got a “kick” out of watching recreation assistant Pat Bellone help out with the moves.

Goodbye Philip!

Recently, participants and staff of the Elder Service Plan PACE Centers said a sadfarewell to discipline leader of social work, Philip Fleisher. Philip is moving on, but a celebration to honor him and his contributionswas enjoyed by many participants and colleagues. Poems, gifts, and cake were shared and savored. Best wishes to Philip, with his band and in all of his future endeavors.

Happy Birthday, ESP!

In early June, participants at the Lewis Mall PACE Center celebrated the Elder Service Plan’s 21st birthday. Ice cream and cake were passed around and shared while participants talked about their own special birthdays in years past.

Sharing information about diabetes

Recently, the Elder Service Plan marketing team, along with members of the EBNHC Chronic Disease Education and Management (CDEM) program, helped spread awareness about diabetes. Many people stopped by the display area to complete a short quiz to assess diabetes risk—and to help themselves to a free apple! We were pleased to distribute so many of our diabetes education handouts, available in both English and Spanish.

Entertainment from ZUMIX

In February, participants and staff at the Lewis Mall PACE Center welcomed representatives from ZUMIX, a community organization that works to build cultural understanding in Boston's diverse neighborhoods. The cultural programming offered by ZUMIX involves many young people and offers an alternative, and entertaining, way for them to deal with frustration, anger, and fear. The ZUMIX performance was well received, encouraging PACE Center participants to sing and dance along with the entertainers.

Birthday season!

The Lewis Mall PACE Center was happy to celebrate yet another 100th birthday recently. Participant Marie Mattarazzo is the new centenarian. She enjoyed her cake, gifts, and many good wishes.

Window winners

Throughout the year, participants at the Lewis Mall PACE Center decorate windows that face Maverick Square with art work reflecting the different seasons and holidays. Each December, the East Boston Main Streets organization holds a holiday window-decorating contest for businesses and organizations in East Boston. This year the Lewis Mall Center won honorable mention for the third year in a row! Recently staff members from the East Boston Main Streets organization came to Lewis Mall to present the honorable mention certificate. A delicious pudding parfait dessert was served to all.

Super Fans

Members of the Lewis Mall PACE Center community celebrated Super Bowl Sunday a few days early. On Friday February 4, 2011, participants were treated to an amazing football cake, and enjoyed some seasonal arts and crafts projects as well.

A Milestone Birthday Celebration

“Happy Birthday!” “Buon Compleanno!” “¡Feliz Cumpleaños!” “Alles Gute zum Geburtstag!”

The Lewis Mall community celebrated participant Emilia’s 100th birthday on January 28, 2011. Emilia’s family sent in a birthday cake for all to enjoy. Many of Emilia’s family members were able to be present at the party, which was held at the Lewis Mall day room. They traveled from Italy, Argentina, Germany, and from local towns to celebrate Emilia’s birthday with the Lewis Mall participants and staff. It was a great day!

Which Witch?

A Halloween celebration was held recently at the Elder Service Plan Lewis Mall PACE Center. Participants and staff enjoyed food, fun, and each other’s costume choices. Click here to view more photos.

Off to the Races!

On September 3, 2010, participants and staff from the Elder Service Plan’s Lewis Mall PACE Center visited Suffolk Downs race track. On a pretty day, the spectators enjoyed the horses, the setting and view, the excitement of the races, and good company.

Most Recent Dance Demo at Lewis Mall? The Hula!

The latest visitor to the Elder Service Plan’s Lewis Mall PACE Center was a hula dancer! Dancer Patricia Vero of Hula Aloha Dancers lived in Hawaii for nine years and is experienced in belly dancing as well as the hula. Her grass skirt received lots of attention and compliments from center participants. Both participants and staff were invited to join in the dancing, and the show certainly put everyone in the mood for summer fun.

Smokey (the dog) Comes Calling at Lewis Mall

Recreation assistant Maria McCracken brought her dog, Smokey, to visit the Elder Service Plan’s Lewis Mall PACE Center recently. Center participants loved petting Smokey and giving him hugs—and, with a smile, Smokey soaked up all the attention! Smokey’s visit was a treat for everyone at Lewis Mall. He was a model guest.

According to information from the Centers for Disease Control, owning and loving a pet can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, while reducing depression, anxiety, and feelings of loneliness. Maria plans to bring Smokey to visit more often!
