Healthy habits start at home. When families participate together in making healthier lifestyle choices, children are far more likely to grow into healthy adults.
To support those positive outcomes, Let's Get Movin' provides Parent Programming. This part of our program includes three elements: nutrition education, cooking groups, and physical activity.
Nutrition Education
Let’s Get Movin’ offers a three-part series of educational classes for parents. Each session is standalone, but parents are encouraged to attend all three sessions. After the series, the class takes a trip to the grocery store. A gift card for the purchase of healthy groceries is awarded to all who attend.
In these classes, parents and caretakers of children in the Let’s Get Movin’ program learn how to make healthier choices when shopping for and preparing meals, how to read and understand nutrition labels, how to encourage healthy eating habits in their children, how to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy beverages, and the importance of providing nutritious snacks and meals at home. Participants receive a shopping guide that shows how to select healthier products at the supermarket, such as choosing skim milk instead of whole milk, and whole wheat bread instead of white bread. The class concludes with a “field trip” to a local grocery store where parents are assisted in applying their new awareness to the practicality of shopping.
Cooking Groups
Let’s Get Movin' brings the Operation Frontline Eating Right program to EBNHC. This six-week cooking class is offered to graduates of the nutrition education series and is designed to teach parents how to prepare and shop for healthy meals on a limited budget.
Physical Activity
Because parents are their children’s biggest role models, we encourage parents to remain physically active as part of their own healthy lifestyles. Let’s Get Walkin’ is our parent walking program. The group meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to provide parents an opportunity to stretch and walk together. For more information, call us at 617-568-4071.
