Project SHINE
Reaching out: HIV in our community.
Project SHINE (Support, Healthcare, INtervention, Education) is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary HIV services program, developed to meet an essential need in our community.
We provide and coordinate medical care for individuals with HIV and AIDS, and those at risk. Our high-level clinical expertise allows us to stay in step with the rapidly changing technologies that help us to manage the disease. Our goal is to decrease the barriers to accessing primary and specialty care services for all individuals within the community who are HIV-positive or are at risk for acquiring HIV.
We offer HIV counseling, confidential testing (through primary care and community-based locations such as local courts and substance abuse treatment facilities). We also provide mental health care, crisis intervention, and referrals for substance abuse treatment, STDs, viral hepatitis screening, and treatment. For those at risk, education and referral services are available through targeted in-reach and out-reach activities.
In spring 2007, Project SHINE launched a new rapid testing clinic, enabling individuals to receive confidential test results in 20 minutes. The walk-in rapid testing clinic is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., located on the second floor, Practice 5, at 10 Gove Street in East Boston and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Project SHINE, located on the first floor at 79 Paris Street in East Boston. Patients can also make an appointment to be tested Monday through Friday at the Project SHINE clinic by calling 617-568-4622 or 617-568-4663.
Adherence to a pharmaceutical protocol is a key factor in managing HIV—and we work hard to help participants manage their medication regimens. Under the Project SHINE model, an infectious disease specialist, a HIV-specialized nurse (available 24 hours a day), a mental health clinician and a concrete services case manager form the multidisciplinary clinical team, supported by primary care physicians, nutritionists, and other medical providers. Our resources include collaboration with chronic care facilities, home care, hospice care, social services agencies, and other community-based organizations for other services.
